Show this to the staff! (Point-and-Order)

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, just tap one of these phrases and show your screen to the waiter. It works like magic!

0. Entrance

Show this screen while holding up your fingers to show the number of people.

この人数ですが、入れますか?

(Kono ninzu desu ga, hairemasu ka?)

English: “There are this many of us. Can we come in?”

💡 Survival Tip: If the staff makes an “X” with their fingers, it means they are full. If they say “Douzo” or “Kochira e” while gesturing inside, you are good to go!

🍺 1. The “Golden” First Order

When you just sat down and want to start immediately.

とりあえず、生ビールをください。

(Toriaezu, Nama-biiru wo kudasai.)

English: “To start with, a draft beer, please.”

💡 Survival Tip: In Japan, “Nama-biiru” is the standard draft beer. Ordering this first is the ultimate pro-move.

🍽️ 2. The “Trust the Chef” Order

When the menu is too long or handwritten and you can’t read it.

おすすめを3つ持ってきてください。

(Osusume wo mittsu motte-kite kudasai.)

English: “Please bring your top 3 recommendations.”

💡 Survival Tip: This is the best way to get the freshest, most delicious seasonal food without looking at the menu.

💧 3. Stay Hydrated

When you need a break or just need some water.

お冷(お水)をください。

(Ohiya (Omizu) wo kudasai.)

English: “Water, please.”

💡 Survival Tip: Most Izakayas provide free tap water. “Ohiya” is the polite term for cold water.

🧻 4. The Essential Question

When nature calls and you can’t find the door.

お手洗いはどこですか?

(Otearai wa doko desu ka?)

English: “Where is the restroom?”

💡 Survival Tip: Izakaya restrooms are often hidden or down a narrow hallway. Ask early!

💰 5. The Grand Finale

When you’re ready to head to the next spot.

お会計をお願いします。

(Okaikei wo onegaishimasu.)

English: “Check, please.”

💡 Survival Tip: You can also cross your index fingers to make an “X” sign—staff will understand you want the bill immediately.

Warning!!

⚠️ Note on “Otoshi” (Cover Charge)

Don’t be surprised if a small dish arrives that you didn’t order. This is “Otoshi,” a mandatory appetizer and cover charge (usually 300-500 yen). Think of it as an admission fee to the Izakaya experience!
